Set in 1940s, Nyonya Ronggeng shines a spotlight on Peranakan culture in Malaysia, bringing its colourful history to life on a global stage. The main setting of this film will be at the Nyonya Mansion, a genuine mansion with all the Peranakan finishings and trimmings which located in Kuala Lumpur. It plans to turn into a tourist attraction with the combination of gallery and F&B outlet serving Nyonya delicacies once the film is released and open for those keen to interested in peranakan culture and heritage.

Preserving Peranakan Heritage

Generations ago, Chinese settlers from the southern provinces made their way to the Malay Archipelago in search for better opportunities. The intermingling of the two ethnic groups over the years eventually lead to a unique cultural fusion, bringing about traditions adorned with elegant garments, bejewelled beaded shoes, and flavourful cuisine.

The emergence of these artistry has only enriched our society. And it is all owed to the successful assimilation of the two cultures – now known as the Peranakans, or Baba-Nyonyas.

However, the Peranakan culture in Malaysia seems to have been portrayed erroneously by tv drama or movie. While the Baba-Nyonya presence is still strong, there isn’t a definite foundation that would secure the Peranakan’s place and ensure that their heritage will be preserved and elevated in years to come.

With the vision of preserving the peranakan culture and heritage, Nyonya Ronggeng aims to present the movie in a true peranakan style by sharing the right facts of this colorful home-grown national heritage.

Rewrite the Local Film Industry

In the context of globalization, Malaysia film industry presents a challenge in promoting the industry as part of a creative industry with great economic potential.

With the influx of films from abroad, especially from Hollywood, the industry is struggling to the hilt to survive, as the bigger portion of the audience prefers Hollywood to local productions. Hence, ZLK Production believe that Malaysian film industry has the potential to go beyond its locality and aims to create a Malaysia local made film to an international level by a vision in approaching into international awards.

Showcasing the background of unique Baba Nyonya communities, ZLK Productions has confidence in Nyonya Ronggeng will be a film which perceive the potential to travel globally.

Producer

YingLi Tan (Zoee)

YingLi Tan (Zoee), the brainchild behind the creation of the movie “Nyonya Ronggeng”.

For her, Malaysia’s colourful history ought to be shared with the world, especially the story of a culture of which she is a part of — the Straits Chinese. Upbringing as a child of mixed marriage bringing her the passion of going deeply into the root of culture and one of them is the peranakan culture and its history which is her family lineage. YingLi Tan (Zoee) is a person who always believe to share the right facts, her curiousity sparked a desire to share the rich history of Peranakans while exploring her roots, and this inspired her to produce this movie which feature the peranakan culture and background.

The desire to tell a story revolving around this sub-culture stems back to the time when she wanted to introduce Malaysia to her foreign friends. She felt the Baba Nyonya culture is almost unique to Malaysia and it would be a great idea to highlight this as part of the fabric that makes up Malaysia.

“Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try”, this quote has motivated her to spent several years doing research on the Baba-Nyonya community. She believes that this movie would be a good opportunity to highlight the customs, life and food of the peranakan culture and she wish to convey positive messages to Malaysians in general through films by encouraging them to embrace cultural diversity. There will be also a series of upcoming projects which feature the history and culture of Peranakan.
