Nyonya Ronggeng
NYONYA RONGGENG is a film about the hardships and sacrifices of a woman by the name of Rose who is of an aristocratic Baba Nyonya descent. Rose struggles to stay in relationships as her presence invites hatred amongst the family members of her lovers solely because of her profession as a ronggeng dancer. The story begins her parents were killed in the Sook Ching Massacre in Singapore. Rose who was still young at that time was raised by her father's servant who managed to escape the Japanese soldiers. He then became close friends with a ronggeng stage owner. Rose grew up learning more and more about love yet she still had to endure frustrations and pain. The story of Rose will be told periodically, against the backdrop of several important events that happened in our country from the year 1942 until the late 1970s, for example the Sook Ching Massacre, the Independence of Malaya on the 31st of August 1957 and the 13th of May 1969 tragedy.
